Valerie Begeman
Valerie Begeman, Rapid City , SD: Valerie’s rug hooking adventure began while visiting her mother in south Texas, in 2004 where she wintered. Her mothers active rug hooking group invited her to sit in one day...the rest is history! Learning by the side of her mother, attending camps-workshops and encouraged to obtain her McGown accreditation . . which she achieved in 2018, Valerie believes her calling is to spread the Rug Hooking “Bug”!
She teaches locally at shops, out of her studio, at hook-in’s and schools. She is busy as a traveling teacher having taught in, Missouri, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota & South Dakota adding two teaching stops to Texas in 2024. Valerie has been invited to teach at the ATHA Conventions in Kansas City and Dallas, TX. She is looking forward to adding Oregon to her teaching state check off list!! She is on the board of ATHA National as the Regional Coordinator. She is a member of The Black Hills Area Rug Hookers, and her local ATHA chapter, Mt. Rushmore Rug Hookers' Social Club.
She’s written several 'how to' articles that have been published in the ATHA magazine...and has several more in the works.
She’s been fortunate to have been chosen as a finalist five times in Rug Hooking Magazine’s "Celebration" Magazine competition in the past 6 years! She enjoys teaching all styles of Rug Hooking and designing her own patterns. Best known for her painterly style, Valerie encourages her students to look at their art work with a creative eye!
